    Dear Families,

Art is an integral part of elementary education. As part of the general learning process, art balances the curriculum to develop the whole intellect. This encourages self-expression, creative problem solving skills, and hand-eye coordination. The Art Program at Dows Lane encourages appreciation of aesthetics, group and individual creativity, communication, knowledge and understanding of cultures, aesthetic literacy and analytical thinking such as experiences in art criticism and appreciation.

I am looking forward to a fantastic year teaching your child to enjoy, appreciate, and create art. In order to provide the best possible learning environment for your student we will be developing our guidelines for behavior on the first day of class. This plan will give every student the opportunity to manage his or her own behavior and will be in effect at all times in the Art Room.

I hope you enjoy your child's artwork and encouraging them to talk about his/her work. Thank you for your support. Together, we can make this a terrific experience!

K-3 Art Overview

  • Kindergarten and Grade 1

Art is an important part of the Kindergarten Curriculum. In kindergarten art students will safely learn to use a variety of art materials available for drawing, painting, cutting, pasting, etc. This is not only enjoyable, but also provides important opportunities for learning. Your students will express original ideas and feelings, improve their coordination, develop small muscle skills, learn to recognize colors and shapes, and develop creativity and pride in their accomplishments by exploring and using art materials.

In grade one, art students will continue to build their art vocabulary and skills through exposure and exploration to various art materials. We will look at and talk about major works/styles of art, as well as create our own masterpieces using the elements and principles of design.  We will study various artists, art styles and cultures from around the world.

    Grade 2 and Grade 3

In grade two, students have developed a vast base of knowledge in art vocabulary, materials, art history and skills. As a second grader students are provided opportunities to expand on the drawing and painting concepts introduced in prior years in art. Emphasis is placed on experiences with design principles, drawing techniques and painting skills leading to the development of abilities that are necessary for advanced art courses.

In grade three, students create advanced artworks and have more artist choice in their design and composition. Students will use advanced art materials and the skills that they’ve developed to create advanced works in a variety of media. Students will look at art through the eyes of the artists’, making meaning in what they see and create. They will use critiquing skills to speak about others art in a constructive way and self-assess their artwork based on a clear set of criteria.

    • Artists are expected to come to class prepared with a positive attitude!
    • Artists are expected to participate in class, listen and act appropriately.

    • Artists are expected to have fun!

     What’s Art Class Like?
Dows Lane students have art each week for 45 minutes. Class time is divided into 2 parts. Art Learning Time- which is time where we learn about artwork, artists and cultures. We do this through books, looking, talking, discussion and games. Art Making Time- which is time where artists get to apply what they have learned to a piece of their own work. Art class can be messy, please do not wear your favorite clothes on art days. Everything we use is washable and we do wear smocks, but sometimes things stain. Check with your child'steacher to find out which day your child has art.
