First Graders Explore Addition and Subtraction

First graders in Dane Sannicandro’s class have been exploring the relationship between addition and subtraction. During a recent lesson, they practiced using a number path to count back or count on.

“Counting back signals subtraction as in 6 - 4 = __ and counting on connects to an addition strategy we previously learned when finding a missing part, such as 4 + __ = 6,” Sannicandro said. “As we continue this unit, one of the essential questions that we will answer is ‘how are addition and subtraction like a family?’”
