First Graders Master Trick Words and Phonics Skills

Align with current reading research, first graders at Dows Lane Elementary School recently explored creative ways to practice “trick words” during a lesson in Erica Beck’s class. The students used their gel boards, which provided a hands-on and engaging method to reinforce reading and writing these essential words.

Since trick words, also known as sight words, are spelled irregularly, they require consistent practice from the students. Additionally, the students worked on building words with their magnet boards. They focused on incorporating bonus letters, such as f, l and s, and mastering the glued sound “all.” These activities were part of an ongoing effort to strengthen the students’ literacy skills.
