Students at Irvington Middle School and Irvington High School embraced Red Ribbon Week – the nation’s largest drug awareness and prevention campaign – through a weeklong series of events from Oct. 21-25. This year’s theme of “Life Is a Movie, Film Drug Free,” inspired the students to reflect on making healthy choices and promoting a drug-free lifestyle.
“We had an amazing Red Ribbon Week, with incredible participation from our students,” said Danielle Gamar, student assistance counselor at the middle and high schools. “Their involvement shows just how committed our students are to supporting a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.”
To launch the week’s activities, students, faculty and staff received red ribbons to wear while the campus was decorated with red ribbons to symbolize their commitment. On Monday, the students signed the Red Ribbon Week Banner, pledging to stay drug free. On Tuesday, the high school students enjoyed relaxing activities, such as coloring, playing with Play-Doh and using fidget toys. On Wednesday, they wore red to show their ongoing commitment to a drug-free lifestyle. On Thursday, in line with the theme, “Life Is a Movie, Film Drug Free,” the students shared the character traits that help them avoid substance use. On Friday, they wrapped up the week by participating in a trivia game, testing their knowledge of Red Ribbon Week and the risks of substance abuse.
Red Ribbon Week raised awareness about the dangers of substance abuse and fostered meaningful conversations about healthy decision-making.
