Dow’s Lane Kindergartners Work on Reading Skills

Students in Izabela Swiecka’s kindergarten class learned how to blend and read three-sound short vowel words during their Fundations lesson, which makes learning to read fun while laying the groundwork for lifelong literacy.
“In Fundations, sound instruction is initially linked to letter formation,” Swiecka said. “Kindergartners learn the letter name, its formation and its sound simultaneously. This creates an important link and uses motor memory learning to associate letters with their sounds.”

They also worked on the uppercase letter formations as they traced large uppercase letters, then lowercase letters with their index finger while repeating (echoing) the verbalization. Students are encouraged to pay particular attention to their correct sitting position and the proper pencil grip.
