First Graders Create How-To Informational Books

Students in Corinne Daniels and Julie Giacomantonio’s first grade class at Dows Lane created how-to books based on topics they are experts in. They spent time reading mentor texts that helped them gain an understanding of the parts of a how-to book. The students then chose their topic based on their confidence in teaching others about it.

They were encouraged to use sequencing words and to be sure their words matched their text. They added illustrations with details, an opening and a closing, and then reread and revised to ensure they were clear to the reader.
