Fifth Graders Explore the Chemistry of Food
Main Street School fifth graders recently took on the roles of food scientists to complete a science lab experiment as part of their Amplify unit called Modeling Matter: The Chemistry of Food. They were challenged to create a good-tasting and visually appealing salad dressing that would not separate into layers and that contained no sediment.
Through digital models and simulations, the students were introduced to the particulate nature of matter and how molecules of different substances interact when they are mixed. They also used chromatography to identify whether there was a food dye in a given mixture. As part of the challenge, the fifth graders worked with food coloring, explored dissolving methods, and used emulsifiers to create salad dressings that were able to stay mixed, look visually appealing, and taste good.
