School Day Information

  • The Main Street School is located at 101 Main Street. The main building has 4 floors and our gym facility is in a separate building connected by a covered pathway.

    School Hours
    8:50 a.m. – 3:15 p.m.  

    All students are expected to be lined up with their class by 8:50 a.m in their designated locations.

    Late Arrival Hours: 10:50 a.m. - 3:15 p.m.
    Early Dismissal Hours: 8:50 a.m. - 12:10 p.m.
    Early Release for Professional Learning: 8:50 a.m. - 2:10 p.m.

    Arrival & Dismissal
    MSS has extremely limited visitor parking. In order to ensure the safety of all students, staff and visitors, we continue to encourage all bus-eligible students to ride the bus to and from school. 

    Arrival Procedures
    Students should not arrive before 8:40a.m. Students who arrive at school prior to 8:40 a.m. will be not be permitted into the building and are unsupervised.

    By Car: Parents driving students to school should pull up in a parallel position to the front of Main Street School and drop off their child. Children will then enter the building via the Main Street entrance. 

    By Bus: Our buses drop students off in the parking lot and children enter the building using the Main Street entrance.

    Late Arrival Procedures (Students arriving after 8:50 a.m.)
    All students should enter through the Main entrance and report to the security desk.

    Dismissal Procedures  

    Children Riding the Bus:  Teachers walk children to the bus.

    Parents of Walkers and Pickups:  Children walk out with their class and are free to leave the grounds without supervision.  Parents who are waiting should wait for their child in front of the Main Street entrance.

    Early Pickups:   Parents meet their child at the security desk and sign out.  

    Requests for Changes in Your Child’s Dismissal:  It is important that whenever there is a change in your child’s dismissal plan, you let the teacher know via a note that morning. Parents may email dismissal changes to the classroom teacher; however, if a confirmation is not received then the parent must contact the main office.  Last minute changes may be made by calling the Main Office at 914-269-5213, no later than 2:45 p.m.

    Absence and Lateness
    If your child is going to be absent or late for any reason, you must call the Nurse's Office (914-269-5250) before 8:50 a.m. to report the reason for his/her absence or lateness. Please call the Nurse’s Office even if you have notified the teacher. You may call any time day or night and leave a message on the Nurse’s Office voicemail. Messages are retrieved by 8:30 a.m. every morning.

    Students returning to school after an absence must bring a note to their teacher explaining the absence.  It is good practice to bring in a doctor's note following a sick visit to the doctor.

    Emergency School Closings  
    Parent Square is a service the district uses to alert parents of weather-related closures, delays or emergency related events. You can receive alerts on your home phone, cell phone, e-mail as well as a text message. Please log into Infinite Campus to make changes to your contact information. You can also stay informed via News 12 or WFAS radio. The websites are listed below.

    Dress Code

    Cold Weather:  
    Clothing should be appropriate for the weather each day. During the winter months, children will often go out for recess and will need long pants, a coat, gloves/mittens and a hat. Outerwear should be easily put on and taken off. Students who do not have coats will not be permitted outside.   It is suggested for students who like to wear shorts, even in winter months, to keep long pants in their locker to change into for recess.

    Physical Education:
    In order to secure the safety of our students, sneakers must be worn on days when your child has Physical Education. Please do not send your child in with slip-on shoes (i.e. flip-flops), platform sneakers or boots. Your child will be unable to participate in physical education unless sneakers are worn. Children should be comfortably dressed. 

    Bus Safety
    For safety on the bus, children should not wear long scarves, untied laces or anything else that could be caught on the bus stairs or in its windows and doors.

    Lost & Found
    A box behind our security desk is designated for Lost & Found items. Parents and children should check this area for missing items. We encourage parents to label all clothing, backpacks, books, wallets, etc. with the child’s name. All unclaimed items will be donated to charity at the end of the year.

    Celebrations

    Birthdays:  Teachers coordinate monthly birthday celebrations with classparents.   Please click here to read our nut aware letter to parents. Also, consider sending in a healthy food item as part of the celebration.

    If you plan to have a party for your child outside of school, please do not send invitations to school unless all students are invited. In addition, party favors and gifts are not to be distributed at school.  

    Halloween:  Children may wear Halloween costumes to school on Halloween; however, students may not wear masks or bring weapons. There are grade-level classroom activities for the children throughout the day.  

    Winter Celebration:  This is a student celebration that takes place the day before the Winter Break. This celebration includes pajama day, a grade level breakfast and a school-wide sing-a-long.

    Spirit Day:The emphasis of Spirit Day early in the school year is to allow fourth and fifth grade students time to meet each other through cooperative activities. The experience also fosters Main Street School spirit.  Spirit Day at MSS is organized and supervised by teachers. 

    Bulldog Day:  Bulldog Day is a half-day school-wide event held in the spring. It is generally held in May (unless postponed due to weather). Children participate in cooperative activities. The day fosters Main Street School spirit. Bulldog Day at MSS is organized and supervised by teachers. 

    End of the Year Celebrations:  Each grade has its own special and traditional way of celebrating the end of the school year. The fourth grade has a picnic, and fifth grade visits Elmwood Day Camp.

    Fourth Grade Picnic:  This is for students only. The day is organized and facilitated by the 4th-grade teachers. Parents are encouraged to join us during the lunch hour. 

    Fifth Grade Day at Elmwood Day Camp:  An end of year celebration will be planned. Details will be shared with fifth-grade families in late spring.

    Main Street School Family BBQ:   Our beginning of the year BBQ is a whole family celebration of our MSS community. This is a fun opportunity to spend time together, enjoy a BBQ and dance to the music!  Students must be supervised by their parents at this event.

    Moving Up Day:  Fifth graders mark the end of their elementary years with a Moving-Up Ceremony held at the end of the school year.

    Valuables and Toys
    We do not permit children to bring toys and valuables to school. This includes any type of electronic toy, collectibles as well as expensive watches and jewelry. Please understand that we have no way of safeguarding these items during the school day. We’ve also found that children learn best when these distractions are kept safely in the home. Although children have lockers, they are not locked and are used for keeping coats and backpacks.

    Cell Phones and Electronic Devices
    Cellphones and smartwatches must be turned off and in students' backpacks for the duration of the school day. Students are permitted to use their devices prior to entering the building in the morning and after exiting the building in the afternoon. Students are permitted to read on an eReader as long as it is not connected to the internet. 

    Lunch and Recess

    Lunch:   
    Each student has a 25 minute supervised lunch period. Children may bring lunch from home or buy lunch. Our food service offers a salad and sandwich of the day, a la carte items are also available. Our lunch menu is posted on our website.

    Recess:   
    Each day, students enjoy a 25 minute recess period. Recess is held outside, weather permitting. Guidelines for those decisions include wind chill, precipitation and any weather warnings the school may have received. When outdoor recess is not appropriate, students remain indoors in a variety of locations/activities dependent upon their grade level. We try to offer every student engaging activities, while they remain safely indoors with adult supervision.  On some days, depending on weather, we offer both an indoor and outdoor option.

    Lunch/Recess clubs are available. Each year a variety of clubs are offered. Clubs are held during the lunch and recess periods and are supervised by MSS Staff.  

    Recess Monitors  

    At Main Street we have monitors that supervise students during the recess period. The recess monitors are not full-time employees of Main Street and are generally here only during the recess periods. Their primary role is to maintain the health and safety of all children.
