MSS Students Swing Into Action With Golf Unit

Fourth and fifth graders at Main Street School dived into the world of golf during their physical education classes throughout November. The engaging unit introduced them to the history of golf, the different types of clubs and fundamental techniques for driving, chipping and putting.

The culmination of the unit was the mini golf course construction project that showcased creativity and teamwork. Working in groups, the students designed and built their own mini golf holes, transforming the gym into a dynamic course. Each class then had a mini golf tournament, playing each other’s designs while learning about scoring and par.

“Golf is a lifetime activity that students can play with peers, family and friends outside of school,” physical education teacher Laura Shaw said. “This unit gives students a fun introduction to the sport and inspires them to be courageous learners as they try something new. I hope after our unit more students will consider trying the sport outside of school as a form of recreation and fitness.”
