Athletes Compete at State Track and Field Championship
Irvington High School students Miles Demarest and Liam Lyons had an outstanding performance at the New York State track and field competition at Cicero-North Syracuse High School on June 10-11.
Demarest finished his best race of the season and placed eighth in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 59.28. Lyons finished third in Division 2 in the 1,600-meter run, running a personal-best time of 4:17.32, which was four-tenths of a second off the school record that was set in 1982. Lucas Turano also qualified for the state championship in the 3,200-meter race but was unable to compete.
“We are very proud of all three state qualifying athletes, and we look forward to one more weekend with Liam and Lucas at nationals,” coach Christopher Barry said. “They have done a great deal for our program.”
Lyons and Turano, along with Indy Minkoff and Max Shevrin, will compete on June 16 in Philadelphia in the New Balance Nationals’ 4x1-mile relay in an attempt to better their own school record set back in early May. In addition, Demarest will compete on June 17 in the New Balance Nationals’ 400-meter hurdles.
