Third Graders Stack Cups While Practicing Multiplication Skills

One by one, third graders stacked colorful cups and built tall structures as part of the Math Fact Fluency celebration in Ronni Alpert’s class on June 3. The hands-on activity was designed to honor the students’ accomplishments in math and encourage them to collaborate.

“The students had to work together to stack the cups and create an architectural masterpiece,” Alpert said. “Each student picked one cup. They read a math expression aloud, such as what is 8 times 8 or 5 times 7, and answered it. If they were correct, they got to stack the cup. Then, it was the next student’s turn.”

Alpert said the challenge taught students that learning is fun. In addition, Irvington High School senior Yamilet Ulerio assisted the students in class as part of her senior internship and collaborative partnership between Dows Lane and the high school.
