Third Graders Are ‘Worth Knowing About’

Third graders at Dows Lane Elementary School took on the roles of prominent people and showcased their knowledge during the inaugural Wax Museum event, held in the school’s third grade wing and flexible seating space on Jan. 10.

As a culmination to the Literacy Biography unit and the unit’s essential question, “Why are certain people worth knowing about?”, the students researched different prominent figures and created large informational posters before dressing up as their chosen person for the event.

“Our third grade teachers, librarian Gina Samaniego and K-5 literacy coach Nancy Deakin have all been helping students learn to read closely and deepen their understanding as they read,” Principal Andrea Kantor said.

The students “came to life” when family and staff members, who were invited to attend, walked up to them and asked them why their chosen person was worth knowing about. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kristopher Harrison attended the event and spoke to students, some of whom had taken on the roles of Ariana Grande, Bruce Lee and Betsy Ross.

The project was created and led by third grade teachers Ronni Alpert, Michele Barnattan, Joan Burns, Mary Lynn Child, Christopher Cullen, Nina Jimenez, Diane Kiernan, Julia Kim, Danielle Lee, Krystal Mitchell and Elizabeth Winnegar.
