Fifth Graders to Compete in Statewide Math Tournament Championship Finals

A team of Main Street School fifth graders will represent their school in the New York State First in Math tournament, which will take place at the University at Albany on June 1.

Fifth graders Kiran Gimenez, Ansh Menon and Addie Rosato advanced to the championship finals after being named regional winners at the qualifying round on March 21. The students will be working together on grade-appropriate challenges based on games from First In Math and the 24 Game series. Through a grant from the New York State Education Department, Main Street School students have been working with the First In Math program to improve fact fluency, procedural fluency and computational thinking skills.

“We wish our students the best of luck in the tournament,” Principal Joyce Chapnick said. “Special thanks to Molly Stern for her hard work behind the scenes supporting us all year in First in Math, and to Michelle Sensi who will be our teacher proctor at the tournament.”
