Innovative Play Sparks Kindergartners’ Creativity

From building forts to collaborating on a Lego structure and drawing pictures, Dows Lane Elementary School kindergartners immersed themselves in a world of creativity and collaboration through various activities in Melaynne Vestal’s class.

“Choice time is an opportunity for kindergarten students to participate in free play time in the classroom,” Vestal said. “It helps to build creativity and imagination, problem-solving abilities and social skills. Students learn from each other during this time, and it provides me with a chance to interact with my students in a different way.”

During choice time, a group of students collaborated on a Lego structure they’ve been working on for a week while others brought their drawings to life by adding stamps. Meanwhile, a group created a fort, as others played familiar scenarios in the kitchen area and some played a game to reinforce phonics and reading strategies.
