Third Graders Create Original Chalk Float Prints

Equipped with colorful chalk, paper and a container of water, Dows Lane Elementary School third graders created unique chalk float prints during a project in Marisa Micolucci’s art classes. During the collaborative activity, the students worked with a partner and rubbed a popsicle stick up and down a piece of chalk to shave flecks of it into the water. Once they achieved the desired color, they carefully laid a piece of paper on top of the water before lifting it to reveal their print.

“The chalk float prints will be the background for a large dragon-eye drawing that students will layer on top,” Micolucci said. “At the beginning of the class we learned about Chinese New Year and discussed the Year of the Dragon. We learned that in Chinese mythology, dragons represent success, courage and good fortune.”

Throughout the experience, the third graders reviewed color theory before choosing between three and four colors of chalk for their masterpieces.
