Main Street School Math League Club Members Earn Awards

Members of Main Street School’s Math League Club celebrated their dedication and interest in math with a culminating ice cream celebration and award ceremony. During the ceremony, they recognized the fourth grade team for placing first in the region of the Euclidean fourth grade competition. In addition, fourth graders Derek Li and Matilda Feil and fifth grader Jack O’Hanlon scored perfectly in every competition and were each honored with a special medal.

“With an outstanding score of 178 out of a possible 180 points, we are honored to be crowned the Region 2 winners,” Principal Joyce Chapnick said. “This achievement is a testament to the dedication, persistence and teamwork demonstrated by every member of our fourth grade Math League Team and their incredible efforts throughout the school year. Their hard work and commitment have truly paid off.”

Throughout the school year, the fourth and fifth graders competed in five national math meets, sponsored by the prestigious Continental Mathematics League. During club time, they practiced their problem-solving skills and reviewed questions from past contests.

“The Continental Math League questions are challenging, include rich vocabulary, and are meant to stretch the students’ computational and analytical thinking skills,” club adviser Christine Rosner said. “Our focus as a group this year was not only to solve the problems correctly, but to share different strategies and solution paths.”

Members of the fourth grade team include Sebastian Balaraman, Jade Coviello, Jacob Daniels, Olivia DiCarlo, Matilda Feil, Emilia Forster, Micah Lee, Derek Li, Zane Mojtabaee-Zamani and Audrey Sherwin. Members of the fifth grade team include Jayanth Chandran, Abigail Gerson, Abhay Hardas, Toby Lowenbraun, Ansh Menon, Jack O’Hanlon, Camille Orton, Aaron Rodriguez, Audrey Schwartz, Andrew Surguladze, Arjun Varanasi, Catherine Weiss and Jacob Wolkoff.
