Irvington Honors Gina Maher’s 800 Wins and Coaching Excellence

Students and staff from across the Irvington Schools hosted celebratory parades and a pep rally on April 5 in honor of Irvington High School girls basketball coach Gina Maher, as well as her team and the winter sports championship participants. As they lined up outside their classrooms, the students commemorated Maher’s incredible success and legacy and recent major career milestone – 800 wins.

The celebration began at Dows Lane Elementary School, followed by Main Street School and culminated at the campus gymnasium. Over the last 47 years, Maher’s commitment to excellence has resulted in an impressive collection of titles, each a testament to the passion she brings to her role. She boasts 16 sectional championships, six state titles and five federation championships.

“For close to five decades, Coach Maher has instilled in her teams a sense of pride, unity and resilience,” Athletic Director John Buonamano said. “Her key phrase, ‘holding the rope,’ serves as a powerful metaphor for the unwavering support and commitment she expects from her players. It is a reminder that success is not achieved alone, but through the collective effort and support of those around us.”

Under her guidance, Maher has led the Irvington girls basketball team to numerous victories on the court and fostered a culture of teamwork, hard work, respect and dedication that extends beyond the game.

“Her impact on her players, both as athletes and individuals, is truly immeasurable,” Buonamano said. “As we celebrate this incredible milestone of 800 wins, we cannot help but recognize the dedication, commitment and sense of community that coach Maher has fostered throughout her journey. It is truly remarkable to see how a program led by such an amazing person has achieved such success.”

In addition to students and staff, the celebration was attended by administrators, local, county and state politicians, and Board of Education members.
