Mr. John Buonamano

John Buonamano is now in his 8th year as a Director of Athletics in Section I, currently leading the Irvington Athletics department into his 5th year. With a background as diverse as it is dynamic, John transitioned from a decade-long career in Advertising & Marketing—after earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Arts from SUNY New Paltz—into the realm of education. His journey into athletics was fueled by a deep-rooted passion for sports, which led him to complete a Master’s Degree in Physical Education & Sport Pedagogy from Manhattanville College in 2009, followed by a Certificate of Advanced Study in School Building and District Leadership from SUNY New Paltz in 2017.

As a former collegiate baseball player at Marist College and SUNY New Paltz, John was not just an athlete but a leader, earning All-SUNYAC honors and twice being named a Regional All-American. His senior year saw him take on the role of team captain and represent his peers on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. These experiences have shaped his approach to athletics, emphasizing the development of character, confidence, and leadership in student-athletes.

John’s commitment to athletics extends beyond Irvington. In Section One, he has served on the Modified Committee and now holds the roles of Conference III Baseball Scheduler and Treasurer. He also contributes his expertise as a Board Member of the NYSPHSAA Foundation, where he works to ensure that every student has the opportunity to participate in sports, with a focus on equitable and innovative programming.

Born in Kingston, NY, and raised in Royersford, PA, John has always stayed true to his roots. Today, he resides with his wife Christina, their two children, Leah and Tyler, and their Maltipoo, Hudson.

John is guided by a compelling vision: "My purpose is to inspire both individual and collective growth, that fosters character, confidence, and community. By working together, we can create an environment where everyone has the chance to thrive and share their unique talents. Through intentional leadership and the influence of Purpose-Based Sports, we'll help others develop essential skills, build resilience, and foster teamwork. Together, we can make a lasting impact on our school community and shape a brighter future."

John expresses his gratitude, saying, "I am truly honored and humbled to serve the incredible community of Irvington. I want to extend my thanks to the students, staff, community members, administrative team, and the Board of Education for entrusting me with the cherished programs of Irvington Schools. I look forward to continuing our partnership as we strive for academic and athletic excellence while ensuring safe and engaging learning experiences for everyone in our community."
