Irvington Students Pledge to ‘Celebrate Life. Live Drug Free’
Students at Irvington Middle School and Irvington High School celebrated Red Ribbon Week, the largest drug abuse prevention campaign in the country, from Oct. 23-31. Keeping up with this year’s theme of “Celebrate Life. Live Drug Free,” they participated in events designed to raise awareness of the dangers of substance abuse and to increase drug prevention efforts in their schools and community.
“This theme is a reminder that Americans across the country make significant daily contributions to their communities by being the best they can be because they live drug free,” Student Assistance Counselor and Prevention Coordinator at the middle and high schools Danielle Gamar said.
To kick off Red Ribbon Week, middle and high school students, faculty and staff received red ribbons. They were encouraged to wear their red ribbons through the week in support of a drug free and healthy lifestyle and to then renew their commitment by signing Red Ribbon Week banners. The Red Ribbon Week banners – one at the middle school and another one at the high school – serve as a pledge that students will engage in healthy behaviors. In addition, members of the middle and high schools’ Positive Impact Clubs decorated the campus in red ribbons and bows to celebrate the week, posted flyers about the meaning of Red Ribbon Week and facts about the negative impact of substance abuse.
IHS Positive Impact Club members hosted a Red Ribbon Week celebration in the atrium, where students enjoyed red frozen slushies in cups adorned with fun umbrella straws, along with an attached positive and supportive message about being drug free. In addition, members of the IMS Positive Impact Club facilitated a trivia game, where students tested their knowledge and answered questions based on drug facts in exchange for lollipops, stickers and wristbands.
Special thanks to iASK-CAB for supporting the events throughout the week and to the Positive Impact Club for its work toward Red Ribbon Week.
