Second Graders Expand on Math Strategy to Add and Subtract
Second graders in Kari Carlson’s class have been expanding their math skills. During a lesson, they revisited a decompensation strategy, which they learned in the fall with smaller numbers, to now add and subtract with larger numbers. They also used previously introduced strategies before they learn the formal algorithms.
“With this strategy, students are able to change the numbers to benchmark numbers by making a ten to help them add and subtract more easily,” Carlson said. “The benchmarks we used were in the tens place and were 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80.”
