Fifth Graders Develop Strategies for Multiplication and Division
Fifth graders at Main Street School have been exploring various strategies for multiplication and division involving multidigit and decimal numbers. During their lessons on place value, they’ve been gaining skills to decompose factors and use multiplication strategies involving partial products.
“By developing multiple strategies, students can independently check their work and use peer review to determine accuracy,” fifth grade teacher Sarah Katz said. “Students are encouraged to create area models to better visualize the decomposition of factors using the distributive property and apply that understanding when using the standard algorithm to solve complex problems.”
