Students and Parents as Reading Partners
The Irvington PTSA and Main Street School held its Parents as Reading Partners event on May 15 for third through fifth grade students and their families.
During the event, the students and their parents heard from guest speaker Veera Hiranandani – author of “The Night Diary,” a novel that takes place in India. She is a recipient of the 2019 Newbery Honor Award for her novel, as well as a recipient of the Malka Penn Award for Human Rights in Children’s Literature. During the event, students and parents enjoyed authentic Indian food, which was catered by local restaurant Chutney Masala, while executive chef Navjot Arora created an interactive presentation about the spices of India.
Thanks to all parent volunteers, library committee members Simone Handfield and Robyn Welter, as well as PAC members Dympna Kenny and Niki Grados, and teacher librarian Gayle Pulley. Special thanks to members of Irvington High School’s Latin Club and their adviser Michelle Cella for volunteering during the event.
