Third Graders Master Literacy and Technology Skills

Dows Lane Elementary School third graders worked on the foundations of literacy while enhancing their technological proficiency. During a recent lesson in Krystal Mitchell’s class, they engaged in a word-sorting activity on their computers.

“Through this task, the students learned how suffixes change base words and practiced specific spelling rules, such as dropping the final ‘e’ or doubling consonants in certain cases,” Mitchell said. “The activity also aimed to reinforce spelling and word analysis skills by encouraging students to recognize patterns in word structure.”

In addition, instead of relying on touchscreens, the students practiced using touchpads, improving their technological skills, as touchpads are commonly used in academic and professional settings.

“This practice also helped students improve their fine motor skills, as touchpads require precision and coordination,” Mitchell said. “Additionally, becoming comfortable with different types of technology builds students’ confidence and adaptability when navigating various digital tools.”

Overall, the lesson reinforced several skills and concepts, including spelling rules, categorization and digital navigation. It combined language learning with practical technology use, engaging students while enhancing their understanding of word structure and their ability to use devices effectively.
