MSS Students Inspired by Visit From Retired Army Lieutenant Colonel

Main Street School students recently met with retired Army Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Allison, who visited their school to share his powerful stories and experiences from his military career. The assembly brought together fourth and fifth graders, teachers and staff for an engaging conversation.

“The assembly was phenomenal,” Principal Joyce Chapnick said. “Our students were deeply engaged, asking thoughtful questions that reflected their curiosity and appreciation for the critical role our armed forces play in protecting freedom and democracy. Experiences like this help our students connect to real-world perspectives and deepen their understanding of what it means to be an engaged citizen.”

At MSS, educators emphasize character-building through monthly student-led assemblies and explore essential questions such as “What makes a community?” and “What defines who we are?” Lt. Col. Allison’s presentation reinforced these themes and highlighted the importance of being a global citizen and a maker of change.

Special thanks to Lt. Col. Allison for leaving a lasting impression on the school community.
