Music Students Learn From the Ivalas Quartet
Music ensemble students from Main Street School, Irvington Middle School and Irvington High School had the extraordinary opportunity to learn from the professional musicians of the Ivalas Quartet on Nov. 19. The quartet captivated the students with a live performance and engaging lessons that explored musical concepts, storytelling through music, emotional and cultural connections and the dedication required to become a professional musician.
“What was most enjoyable about the day was watching how the quartet connected with every level of student through brilliant song selections by composers many of us have never heard before, and the incredible conversations that truly engaged every student – from our youngest to our oldest musician – and left them wanting more,” Music Department Chair Debra McCumber.
The Ivalas Quartet’s visit was made possible by a generous grant from the Irvington Education Foundation. McCumber expressed gratitude to district administrators, parents and the foundation for supporting this enriching experience for students.
The learning opportunity aligned with the district’s Portrait of a Graduate by encouraging the students to embody the four dispositions: courageous learners, self-aware individuals, effective communicators and engaged citizens.
The Ivalas Quartet is dedicated to inspiring young musicians by showcasing the sounds of music from diverse cultures and communities, and enhancing the voices that are often underrepresented in the classical music world.
