Dows Lane First Graders Use Coins to Count by Tens and Ones
First graders in Michelle Shear’s classroom use dimes and pennies to count by tens and ones during their math lesson. They have learned that ten ones make a unit called a “10,” just as 10 pennies can be bundled to create a new unit called a dime. Students then linked their work with tens and ones to a place value chart to model two-digit numbers.
