Engaging PLTW Projects at Main Street School
Fourth and fifth grade Project Lead the Way students at Main Street School have been studying their Energy: Collisions and Robots and Automation units, respectively.
The fourth graders have observed the relationship between the speed of an object and the energy of that object using models constructed by collaborative groups. These models are a swinging pendulum and a three-wheeled car which were put together using VEX construction kits. Students used ramps/inclined planes to observe different energy amounts and how height relates to different travel movement and distances.
The fifth grade students are working on building testbeds, which are structures that include elements like sensors, bumper switches, touch LEDs and real motors. All students learned how to operate the testbeds using a robotic “brain” and a remote control. The purpose of a testbed is to help roboticists understand the technological features of a robot before they build an entire robot. Over the next weeks, fifth graders will build their own robots to help solve an environmental problem.
