Students Bring Studies to Life With Trip to O’Hara Nature Center
Main Street School fourth graders explored nature and learned about plants and animals during their trip to the O’Hara Nature Center in Irvington on Nov. 4.
In small groups, the students rotated through several hands-on stations and reflected on topics they had studied as part of the science curriculum. During the day, they visited the honeybee station to learn about beekeeping and taste local honey. They learned about native animals during a presentation, and some had the chance to touch a ferret. As part of the composting station, the students learned about worms and their role in a compost bin. They also went on a nature hike to explore different types of plants.
“In order to ensure the success of this project, the students discussed and reflected on their visit to the O’Hara Nature Center following the visit,” fourth grade teacher Diane Watkinson said.
The students’ trip was made possible thanks to the generous support of the Irvington PTSA and Irvington Recreation Department, and a partnership between the District and the O’Hara Nature Center.
