Students Pay Tribute to Victims of 9/11
On the 18th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks, Irvington Union Free School District students paid their respects to the victims and heroes who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.
A group of Irvington High School students – Isai Andrade, Josh Aronson, Rishit Gupta and Milo Schutz – gathered at Scenic Hudson Park during the Village of Irvington’s annual memorial ceremony to perform taps after the laying of the wreath. They were accompanied by high school band director Debra McCumber, Principal Juliet Gevargis-Mizimakoski and Assistant Principal Matthew Samuelson.
“It is such a special ceremony and a way for the school and community to really come together to remember the lives that were lost on that tragic day and remember the heroic efforts that were made by so many,” McCumber said. “I am so proud of the boys that played today, not just for their stellar performance, but also for their poise at the event.”
In addition, Main Street School students also paid tribute to the victims and heroes of Sept. 11 when they gathered by their school’s flagpole during a memorial tribute. They participated in a moment of silence, which was followed by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. Students at Dows Lane Elementary School and Irvington Middle School heard from their principals Andrea Kantor and David Sottile, respectively, before holding a moment of silence to mark the anniversary.
“There were so many brave people on that day – firefighters, police officers and many others who went to help,” Kantor told her students over the public announcement system.
