38 Eighth Graders Inducted Into National Junior Honor Society
Thirty-eight Irvington Middle School eighth graders became official members of the school’s 2019 National Junior Honor Society during the annual induction ceremony on May 29. They were recognized for their outstanding academic achievements and for demonstrating excellence in the areas of scholarship, character, leadership, citizenship and service.
“To become a member of the National Junior Honor Society is not an easy feat,” said club adviser Linda Palumbo, who organized the event. “Aside from meeting a scholarship requirement of having a cumulative GPA of a 3.9 or higher, students must also meet high standards for citizenship, leadership, service and character. The program was devoted to an explanation of the underlying principles of the Honor Society, as well as a ritual of induction for the newly selected members.”
The induction included a candle-lighting ceremony, with six students each lighting a candle representing one of the cardinal principles that form the framework of Honor Society and speaking briefly about its meaning. The first candle lit was the candle of knowledge and truth.
Assistant Principal Allyson Daley and Principal David Sottile presented the students with their membership certificates before the inductees took their membership pledge.
