Irvington First Graders Build Communication Skills Through Arts & Letters Literacy Lesson
Dows Lane first graders in Ms. Beck’s class began their new “Creature Features” unit with an Arts & Letters lesson that invited them to practice careful observation, discussion, and collaborative meaning-making. Students examined a detailed artwork of a hare by Albrecht Dürer and shared what they noticed about its features and composition.
Working in partnerships, students described elements such as texture, background details, and notable animal characteristics including long ears, sharp claws, and fluffy fur. They then brought their ideas to the whole group, building upon another’s observations. Students used hand motions to signal agreement when they heard a detail that matched something they had also noticed, reinforcing active listening and shared understanding.
The lesson highlighted students as effective communicators, an essential Portrait of a Graduate attribute. Through conversation, attention to detail, and thoughtful exchange, students strengthened their language skills while deepening their appreciation for visual art.
