MSS Hosts Parent-Child Book Club Event

Main Street School fourth and fifth grade students and their families participated in literary discussions during the school’s Parent-Child Book Club on April 2.

“We had a fantastic turnout of 70 families,” Principal Joyce Chapnick said. “Students and parents participated in rich discussions about the books that they read. We could not have done it without our dedicated library teacher, Sarah Reilly, and the amazing support of the PTSA. A special thank you to all the volunteers who helped facilitate the book discussions.”

Families had a choice of reading one of five novels that included “Locomotion” by Jaqueline Woodson, “The Bletchley Riddle” by Ruta Sepetys and Steve Sheinkin, “The Eyes & the Impossible” by Dave Eggers, “Song for a Whale” by Lynne Kelly, and “Play Like a Girl” by Misty Wilson.

“The event gave students the opportunity to share their diverse perspectives with an audience beyond their usual classroom, further developing all aspects of the Portrait of a Graduate,” MSS library media specialist Sarah Reilly said. “It was truly a special opportunity to build relationships with families through a shared love of literature.”

This was Main Street School’s second Parent-Child Book Club event for the school year, reinforcing the school’s commitment to fostering a love of reading.
