IMS Students Raise Money for Doctors Without Borders
Irvington Middle School students celebrated National French Week at their school from Nov. 14-18 and raised money for Doctors Without Borders. The efforts were led by French teacher and French Club adviser Deanna Tessler and French Club members.
“We raised over $3,500 from the event, which we are donating to Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) to support their amazing medical humanitarian work around the world,” Tessler said.
Throughout the week, the students served as French ambassadors in each homeroom and invited their classmates to donate to the cause. The homeroom in each grade that raised the most donations was treated to chocolate croissants. In addition, they participated in a daily French culture contest question and French expression of the day and had a chance to win one of several French prizes. French Club students created posters that displayed French content, such as the months, days of the week and weather, and decorated the school with them. The week culminated with a pajama day and food festival when the students received chocolate biscuit cookies as gratitude for their generosity.
Sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French, French Week celebrates French language and culture. This was the 20th consecutive year of celebrating National French Week at IMS.
