Irvington Gives Personal Send-Off to Class of 2020
Irvington High School celebrated its Class of 2020 graduates during an in-person, student-only graduation, held on Meszaros Field on June 27. The event, which was livestreamed thanks to the generous support of the PTSA, allowed the students to connect and share a special moment together.
Principal Juliet Gevargis-Mizimakoski welcomed the graduates, whom she described as resilient. She encouraged them to continue to appreciate the connections they’ve made in Irvington and carry their values and self-awareness into the next chapter of their lives.
“This is a day that you’ve earned, a day that you deserved,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kristopher Harrison said. “You have persevered and demonstrated your resilience which will serve you incredibly well as you move on to that next leg of your journey. We can’t wait to hear of your successes, accomplishments and explorations.”
The graduates also heard remarks from Board of Education President Brian Friedman, class president Katie Spencer, class valedictorian Sarah Garcia and class salutatorian Zoe Jacobs. During the celebration, Assistant Principal Matthew Samuelson announced the name of each graduate as they stood up one by one to be recognized.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, Dr. Harrison led members of the Class to 2020 in the traditional movement of the tassels on their caps from right to left – a symbol of their accomplishments and a sign of one chapter of their lives closing and a new one beginning. The graduates waved and tossed their caps in the air before exiting the field.
The week prior, the Class of 2020 was celebrated with a procession along the festively decorated Main Street, Broadway and Heritage Hill Road before they received their diplomas during a drive-through ceremony at the high school campus.
