Irvington High School Teachers Explore Innovative Strategies During Superintendent’s Conference Day

Irvington High School educators engaged in rich, collaborative professional learning during the Nov. 4 Superintendent’s Conference Day, continuing the district’s ongoing work to strengthen student-centered instruction within a block schedule.

The “Designing Dynamic Blocks” workshops –– facilitated by Dr. Stephanie Burke, K–12 Instructional Innovation Coach; Nancy Fitzpatrick, 6–12 Instructional Coach; and Caroline Knudsen, K–12 Inclusion Coach –– were intentionally designed to build upon the strong instructional practices already present across classrooms. The sessions offered additional ideas, refinements, and strategies to support teachers as they continue to design meaningful, engaging learning experiences for students.

Throughout the workshops, educators explored ways to deepen active learning in extended instructional periods, including flexible grouping, purposeful movement, and structures that foster metacognition. Each activity was crafted to be relevant across content areas, reflecting the diverse expertise of Irvington teachers and their commitment to meeting the needs of all learners.

Using a station-teaching model, participants experienced hands-on activities that mirrored the dynamic, student-centered environments already thriving in Irvington High School. Teachers discussed a variety of block scheduling options, shared approaches for structuring longer lessons, and examined strategies for creating inclusive learning communities.

Collaboration was central throughout the day. Educators exchanged ideas, reflected on current practice, and considered how to adapt new strategies in ways that complement the strong foundation already in place. Their shared insights underscored the collective dedication to fostering deeper critical thinking, greater student ownership of learning, and continued innovation across classrooms.

The professional learning sessions provided teachers with valuable tools and perspectives that continue to strengthen the high-quality instructional experiences that define Irvington High School.
