Main Street School Welcomes Veteran Pat O’Hanlon for an Inspiring Visit
Fifth graders at Main Street School had a meaningful opportunity to learn firsthand about service, citizenship, and leadership during a special visit from Army veteran Pat O’Hanlon on Thursday, Nov. 6. Mr. O’Hanlon, father of fifth grader William O’Hanlon, joined students to share his experiences as a Veteran, a Global Citizen, and a Maker of Change.
During the visit, Mr. O’Hanlon spoke about his life in the military and the values that guided his service. Students asked thoughtful questions and explored the connection between military service and the freedoms that shape our democracy. The conversation supported the school’s ongoing work around civic understanding, character development, and learning about the world beyond the classroom.
In a memorable gesture, Mr. O’Hanlon presented Main Street School with a challenge coin. Challenge coins are small medallions traditionally used within the military to signify membership, honor achievement, and strengthen camaraderie. Often given to recognize service or mark a meaningful moment, the coins serve as tangible symbols of commitment, belonging, and pride.
Mr. O’Hanlon’s visit offered students an authentic and inspiring look at service to one’s country, reinforcing the importance of responsibility, empathy, and engaged citizenship. Main Street School is grateful to him for sharing his story and for the powerful lesson his visit provided for the entire school community.
