MSS Celebrates Science at Annual PARP Event

MSS Celebrates Science at Annual PARP Event

Main Street School held its annual Parents as Reading Partners event on June 9, bringing together third through fifth grade students and their families for an inspiring evening about science and activism. The event connected them with local author Nancy Castaldo and featured a reading, discussion and book signing.

Castaldo, a Hudson Valley author, has written award-winning books about the planet for over 25 years. She shared how her love of reading and writing outdoors began in her childhood, and her curiosity led her to study science. Through her work, she strives to inform, inspire and empower her readers about the world around them.

In addition to meeting the author, the students participated in a hands-on science workshop led by Clearwater educators. During two learning stations, the students identified fish and aquatic invertebrates and learned about the life cycles, adaptations, and human impact on the animals. The interactive program was designed to promote a personal connection to the Hudson River through the examination of the diverse life in the estuary. To prepare for the event, the students read “Riverkeeper” and “Whales in the City” in their classrooms.
