Irvington Third Graders Engage in Biography and Country Research

Irvington Third Graders Engage in Biography and Country Research

All third graders at Dows Lane Elementary School are bringing research to life through an engaging project focused on biographies and countries as part of the District’s Arts and Letters English Language Arts curriculum’s knowledge building modules, where these topics are woven throughout the year rather than taught as standalone units.

Through this project-based learning experience, students are embracing The Irvington Way by developing intellectual curiosity, collaboration, and analytical thinking skills. As they study influential figures and countries around the world, students gather evidence, organize their notes, and synthesize information into meaningful presentations. The work challenges them to think critically, connect ideas, and communicate their learning with confidence.

The unit culminates in oral presentations, where students share their research with classmates, reinforcing both academic rigor and effective communication. By connecting their research to real world figures and global topics, students deepen their understanding while building skills that extend beyond the classroom.

“Ultimately, this journey empowers our students to move beyond rote learning, embodying the spirit of collaboration and intellectual curiosity defined by our community. It is a wonderful experience the kids remember for years,” shared Mrs. Barnattan, third grade teacher.

Through inquiry, collaboration, and thoughtful presentation, Dows Lane’s third graders continue to grow as engaged learners, exemplifying the values that define The Irvington Way.
