Irvington Students Clean Up Hudson River Shoreline at Matthiessen Park

Irvington Students Clean Up Hudson River Shoreline at Matthiessen Park

A group of Irvington High School Ocean Club students – Lucy Acharekar, Tess Brady, Alex Brenner, Anna Dorakhova, Alysa Kufile, Alyssa Magallon, Laurel Neubauer, Laiba Shaukat and Leah Taveres – came together on March 22 to help care for the Hudson River shoreline by participating in a cleanup at Matthiessen Park.

Throughout the morning, with their adviser Nadia Parikka, the students collected five bags of litter, including plastic, Styrofoam and other debris. Their efforts made an immediate difference in the cleanliness of the riverfront and, more importantly, contributed to the health of the local ecosystem.

“Cleaning up the park was a meaningful way to feel like I was doing something to protect the environment and give back to the community,” Brenner said. “It was a reminder that even small actions like picking up trash can be a way to show your appreciation for the space you live in and spend time outside with friends.”

Acharekar shared a similar perspective, emphasizing how cleanups bring people together who are passionate about protecting the environment and making a positive difference.

“For me, they’ve been such a great experience, and I’ve really enjoyed getting to know everyone while doing something impactful for our local ecosystem,” she said.

Irvington High School Principal Jon Hirsch described the effort as a reflection of the Irvington Way in action.

“Our students are showing up as engaged citizens, caring for their community and recognizing that even small actions can have a meaningful impact,” Hirsch said. “We are proud of this group for their leadership and their commitment to making a difference, both locally and beyond.”
