Irvington Middle School Hosts Inspiring Assembly With Sweethearts and Heroes

Irvington Middle School Hosts Inspiring Assembly With Sweethearts and Heroes

Irvington Middle School students welcomed two special guests on April 13 and April 14 for a powerful antibullying assembly. Tom Murphy and Sgt. Rick Yarosh, co-founders of Sweethearts and Heroes, engaged the students in meaningful conversations about empathy, resilience and the importance of standing up for one another.

Sweethearts and Heroes is dedicated to preventing hopelessness, bullying and suicide by equipping students and educators with practical human connection skills. The organization emphasizes empathy, compassion and teamwork as core values that help foster a positive school culture.

During their visit, Murphy and Yarosh delivered their antibullying messages to the middle school students through an engaging presentation that called for HOPE (Hold On, Possibilities Exist), empathy and action. They also introduced them to the Magic of Circle, a communication approach rooted in the practice of gathering in a circle to open dialogue and foster compassion and empathy. Yarosh, a Purple Heart recipient and motivational speaker who was burned severely while serving in Iraq, shared his personal story. Murphy, a nationally recognized speaker and youth development leader, complemented the message with strategies for students to support their peers.

Irvington Middle School teacher Tina Buzzetto, who brought Sweethearts and Heroes to Irvington through a generous grant from the PTSA, said the experience left a lasting impression on students and staff. They learned inspiring and transformative lessons, such as standing up to bullying and mistreatment, providing support and empathy, inclusion and small acts of kindness, increased awareness and thoughtful action.

“The students and staff had so much positive feedback,” Buzzettto said. “My seventh grade class has already asked when Sweethearts and Heroes is returning next year. Many staff members have talked to me about what a positive experience the presentation was for them.”

As part of the experience, the students developed a clear understanding of what bullying looks like and how to respond effectively. They explored ways to show empathy and take thoughtful action when someone needs support.
