Dows Lane Third Graders Explore Space, Math, and History Through Arts and Letters Literacy Lesson

As part of the class’s Outer Space module, students explored the concept of trajectory, examining how an object’s path changes based on its velocity. Through hands on demonstrations, students observed how a ball travels under different conditions, allowing them to connect abstract vocabulary and mathematical ideas to real world motion. 
The lesson was enriched through the study of Hidden Figures, which highlights the critical contributions of Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Dr. Christine Darden. Students learned how these pioneering mathematicians and engineers played an essential role in the success of the Apollo 11 mission, using advanced calculations and problem-solving skills to help send astronauts to the moon. 
By blending literacy, science, and mathematics, the Arts and Letters curriculum supports deep learning across subject areas. The lesson encouraged students to think critically, build academic vocabulary, and recognize the impact of diverse voices in scientific achievement.
