Dows Lane First Graders Build Writing Skills Through Reflection and Responsibility

During morning writing in Ms. Christiana Blanks’s first grade classroom at Dows Lane Elementary School, students explored what it means to be self aware while strengthening their foundational writing skills. As part of the lesson, students reflected on their weekend experiences and expressed their ideas through thoughtful written responses, practicing clear communication and purposeful writing. 

Using Arts and Letters instruction alongside Fundations strategies, students applied sentence structure, word work, and letter sound knowledge to support their writing. They independently reread their work, made edits, and refined their sentences to ensure clarity and meaning, demonstrating perseverance and attention to detail. 

Throughout the process, students demonstrated accountability for their learning and growing confidence as writers. By taking ownership of their work and engaging in self reflection, students strengthened both their academic skills and their sense of responsibility within the classroom community. These experiences reflect The Irvington Way by encouraging independence, thoughtful communication, and pride in learning.
