Our Grades 6–8 special area program provides a diverse and engaging set of experiences that support students’ academic, creative, and personal growth, all aligned with the New York State Learning Standards. In art, students refine their skills across a range of media while exploring composition, design, and artistic expression influenced by historical and contemporary artists. Physical education and health focus on fitness, teamwork, personal wellness, and informed decision-making, with topics including goal setting, nutrition, mental health, and lifelong healthy habits. In Home and Careers, students develop essential life skills such as cooking and nutrition, financial literacy, time management, and responsible decision-making. Technology courses engage students in digital literacy, coding, design thinking, and problem-solving, preparing them to navigate and create in an increasingly digital world. In Grade 6, Student Skills supports the transition to middle school through organization, study strategies, self-management, and goal setting.
Our music program offers a wide range of opportunities for students to explore and develop their talents through chorus, band, orchestra, drama, and general music. Students build skills in performance, music literacy, collaboration, and creative expression while engaging with diverse musical genres and traditions. Across all special areas, students embody The Irvington Way by being courageous in trying new experiences, collaborative in working with others, engaged in exploring their interests, and self-aware as they reflect on their growth. These programs play a vital role in developing the whole child, helping students discover their passions, build confidence, and connect their learning to the world around them.
